Spring/Summer 2009 Schedule

KNITTING
   

Beginning Knitting:

Students will learn to cast on stitches, the knit stitch, the purl stitch, increasing and decreasing, reading

pattern basics, making eyelets, the drop stitch, cable basics and binding off.  One skein light-colored

Encore Yarn and size US 7, 8 or 9 knitting needles.

Intro to Lace Knitting:

 

Learn the stitches and techniques for knitting lace using charts and written directions. 

Students will pick out needles and yarn for project during first class.

Socks on Circular Needles:
   

Knit an adult sock using 2 circular needles - it's easier than you think.  Learn sock basics such as cuff or

top treatment, heel flap, turning the heel, ankle gusset, shaping the toe and Kitchener stitch.  One skein

of light colored Encore and two 24" circular needles in size selected after gauge swatch knit in first class.

Bead Knitting :
   

Students will knit a scarf using the bead knitting technique.  Other methods of using beads with

   
knitting will be discussed and demonstrated.

WEAVING
   
     
Fiber and Weave :
   

A 6-week comprehensive course.  Students will learn all the basic weaving skills:  winding a warp chain,

warping a loom, reading a pattern and weaving cloth.  Supply fee based on yarns needed to weave one

adult- sized Alpaca scarf and a set of 4 kitchen towels.

FELTING
   
     
Needle-Felted Dragon:
   
Learn to "sculpt" with wool roving and a felting needle while creating your dragon fantasy.

Felted Rug, 100% Wool:
   
Wet felt a long-lasting floorcovering or wall hanging, approximately 24"X 36".  Participants will use a
   
felting needle and locks (natural or dyed) to apply a design onto lightly pre-felted wool batting and
   
then wet felt the piece to completion.  During the class, the instructor will discuss the history of felting
   
and mechanics of felting wool fibers, processing wool fleece along with the properties of various wool
   
breeds, types and sources. Participants are encouraged to create their own design, or the instructor will
   
supply several designs to choose from.  Participants will have the opportunity to use single felting
   
needles and a multi-felting needle holder.  Participants should bring a bath towel. No previous felting
   
experience is required.

Felted Purse Using Muslin:
   
Needle felt natural colored or dyed wool locks onto a piece of cotton muslin, then wet felt it to create a
   
purse approximately 8" X 12" (also a good size for a pillow top or wall hanging).  Participants will have
   
the opportunity to use single felting needles and a multi-felting needle holder.  During the class, the
   
instructor will discuss the history of felting, and mechanics of felting wool fibers, processing wool fleece,
   
along with the properties of various wool breeds, types and sources.  Participants are encouraged to
   
create their own design, or the instructor will supply several designs to choose from.  No previous
   
felting experience is required. Participants should bring a bath towel.

This class covers the basic crochet stitches, pattern reading as well as tips and techniques.  Students will be

Crochet two bracelets using wire and beads.  Learn basic jewelry techniques for attaching clasps.
